"I know no safe depositary of the ultimate powers of the society but the people themselves; and if we think them not enlightened enough to exercise their control with a wholesome discretion, the remedy is not to take it from them, but to inform their discretion by education. This is the true corrective of abuses of constitutional power."

Man of the Year

First the shoe bomber, now the shoe thrower.
Bush joked afterwards that he saw the man’s “sole”. (Good sense of humor for a war criminal).

“THIS IS THE FAREWELL KISS, YOU DOG!
“This is a gift from the Iraqis. This is the farewell kiss, you dog,” the journalist shouted (in Arabic), Steven Lee Myers of The New York Times reported in a pool report to the White House press corps. Myers reported that the man threw the second shoe and added: “This is from the widows, the orphans and those who were killed in Iraq.” Journalists at the scene said the hurler was Muntadar al-Zaidi, a reporter for Al-Baghdadia TV, an independent satellite channel based in Cairo. From Common Dreams, where you can also find the video. It was reported that the man, a reporter, had been traumatized by seeing the bombing of civilian areas in Sadr City. U.S. bombing of Iraqi cities already occupied is an ongoing and very under-reported story. (Every time I’ve mentioned it in my podcast I get some numbskull emailing me about how accurate the bombings are, or that they don’t happen at all.) These civilian bombings have been going on since the beginning, and many Iraqi civilians die in these bombings. Even worse, the twice-destruction of Fallujah and the use of white phosphorus there on the civilians will ensure our reputation in Iraq for years to come.

Obviously, this is all very traumatic to Iraqis. It’s a wonder more of them don’t snap.
