"I know no safe depositary of the ultimate powers of the society but the people themselves; and if we think them not enlightened enough to exercise their control with a wholesome discretion, the remedy is not to take it from them, but to inform their discretion by education. This is the true corrective of abuses of constitutional power."
--1820 -- Thomas Jefferson

The proposition that the people are the best keepers of their own liberties is not true. They are the worst conceivable, they are no keepers at all; they can neither judge, act, think, or will, as a political body.
-- John Adams

News from July 19th:

  • CIA Plan Envisioned Hit Teams Killing al Qaeda Leaders – If this was such a great idea why did Panetta shut it down
Judith Miller at her new Homeland

Judith Miller at her new Homeland

immediately? Laugh all you want fired ex-NYT reporter Judith Miller, you twisted old botoxed broad  (new co-host of Fox Newswatch) as you did on your last propaganda broadcast. Killing people is hilarious. Just as funny as can be. If you’re a right-wing freak, that is.

  • The Mound Builders of Peru – Not only were archaeologists unable to attribute the mounds to any previously known South American civilizations, there were no other remnants typically associated with an architecturally sophisticated civilizations. Very interesting. Climate obviously changed back then for whatever reason, and possibly wiped them out.
  • Enron Sought Global Warming Regulation, Cap and Trade – It’s not surprising to most people that Enron delivered truckloads of money to politicians in an attempt to influence the political process. What may surprise many, however, is that Enron believed that one of its main opportunities to make money by gaming the political system was global warming.
In addition to all its political lobbying and contributions, Enron became a founding member of the Pew Center on Global Climate Change’s Business Environmental Leadership Council, a leading industry front group pushing the Kyoto agenda. Enron chairman Ken Lay also served on the board of the Heinz Center for Science, Economics, and the Environment, along with Fred Krupp of Environmental Defense, and former Alcoa CEO and current Treasury Secretary Paul O’Neill.” Figures. Now we have another bill all about cap and trade that USCAP and energy companies love too. A price on carbon bill would be better and close the derivatives loophole. I still think Ken Lay is alive too.
  • Defense lawyers seek psych exam for accused 9-11 plotter – In seeking to examine whether accused 9-11 lieutenant Ramzi bin al Shibh is sane, Pentagon defense attorneys are turning to an Israeli-American and Cuban American exile as mental health experts.” He’s probably not sane. Then what?
  • Palestinian ‘terrorist’ plans suit over unwitting role in ‘Bruno’ – “…the middle-aged Palestinian store owner realized that he’d become an unwitting movie actor now known worldwide as “Bruno’s terrorist.” Not really all that funny. I’d probably sue too.
  • ‘U.S. tells Israel to halt East Jerusalem building’ – The United States has told Israel it must halt an East Jerusalem construction project in accordance with the Obama administration’s demands for a complete freeze on settlement building, Israeli radio stations reported on Sunday.
  • Amazon Erases Orwell Books From Kindle Devices – NYTimes.com – On Friday, it was “1984” and another Orwell book, “Animal Farm,” that were dropped down the memory hole — by Amazon.com.” I would never buy a Kindle in the first place, because apparently they still own what you buy. And it’s too expensive. Just buy a book.
  • EU to help China bury CO2 emissions – However, CCS is yet to be demonstrated on a large scale and the costs will have to come down significantly before it can be deployed commercially.” In other words, it doesn’t work yet. They are looking at having it running by 2020. And where will you put the CO2 and who will monitor that it doesn’t leak out?
