Prime Minister Netanyahu and his cabinet intend to fight President Obama’s settlement policy. Netanyahu, in an effort to detract from the conversation, even went so far as to say: “I think that the more we spend time arguing about this, the more we waste time instead of moving towards peace.” In his talks with Secretary of State Clinton, Israeli Foreign Minister Lieberman said bluntly: “We cannot accept this vision absolutely, completely freezing these settlements.”
“Recently [last weekend] French president Nicolas Sarkozy urged the Israeli prime minister to fire his foreign minister — a hard-liner whose party tried to force Israelis to take a loyalty oath, two senior Israeli officials said Tuesday.
Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman’s appointment has been ill-received internationally because of his hard-line positions on peace and Israel’s Arab population, among other issues. But Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, addressing EU ambassadors on Tuesday, expressed “full confidence” in the country’s chief diplomat.
“He is a man who is fully committed to peace and security for our country,” Netanyahu said. “He is part of the democratically elected government of Israel which was elected with a clear mandate from the voters to achieve peace and security.”
In the meeting last week, Sarkozy told Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that “you must get rid of that man,” the two officials said on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to disclose the contents of private conversations.”
It’s obvious that Lieberman has to go. No one that blatantly racist should have a job so prominent in the Israeli government. Since the horrifying slaughter during the last war against the Gaza people in November-December 2008, the world has far less patience with the Israel government whining about things than before. To put it bluntly, I’m glad my country is finally saying no to at least some of the oppressive, destructive bullshit coming out of their government, especially about settlements and the fact that they are still bulldozing Palestinian homes. Most notably, the government’s pretend “focus” on peace, all the while making the underlying causes that prevent peace more ingrained and hard-line.
Israel is also trying to establish a stronger “history” in Jerusalem for the Jewish people, while it destroys the homes and property of the Palestinians who already live in the area, all while it claims it wants “peace”. The blockades and lack of freedom of movement for the Palestinians continues. None of this will ever change until Israel changes. It’s time the world called their bluff and stopped sending them money for weapons. The next thing they are liable to do is make the situation in Iran even worse.
