"I know no safe depositary of the ultimate powers of the society but the people themselves; and if we think them not enlightened enough to exercise their control with a wholesome discretion, the remedy is not to take it from them, but to inform their discretion by education. This is the true corrective of abuses of constitutional power."
--1820 -- Thomas Jefferson

The proposition that the people are the best keepers of their own liberties is not true. They are the worst conceivable, they are no keepers at all; they can neither judge, act, think, or will, as a political body.
-- John Adams

Hatred Fuels the Tea Party Movement

Racists, birthers, and war-lovers. It’s no wonder many Americans (myself included) have no stomach for politics any more. It’s been reduced to this, the political “movement” known as the Tea Party (Tea Baggers). They are still pushing that “birther” story.

This speaker, (a man I’d never heard of)  spoke at the right-wing fringe fest for rich white people known as  Tea Party Nation. This man claims that the Bible is a better birth record for Jesus than an actual legal birth certificate, which President Obama released to the press long, long ago. This is what passes for logic in American politics these days, and it’s depressing because so many people are believing it and not even questioning. The Tea Party people are delusional and racist, or they would have accepted Obama’s birth certificate a long time ago. They can’t drop it because they are so overcome with hate for a non-white president it has completely consumed them.  This is typical of this anti-government cult.

When the blight of the Tea Baggers and their “movement” has vanished from the landscape of American politics, and when Democrats grow some spines, it will be worth being interested in politics again.  Until then, it’s not.  Unfortunately, the Tea Partiers are determined to win elections in 2010 and as more and more people succumb to the insanity that is the Tea Bagger movement, it looks less likely that anything good will get accomplished by our government this year or next. The TPers might even win some seats in Congress.

The other thing besides racism that drives these people is greed. They have a deep fear of taxes, a loathing for poor people, and a hatred for anyone who needs help. Their screed is that everyone needs to help themselves, and if you can’t, then you can die. They don’t care. They want to keep every dime of their taxes and help no one. That really is their philosophy. It’s one step beyond what the Republicans have always wanted, and because of that, with their greed agenda, the Tea Baggers will never really disassociate themselves from the Republican party. They are too alike, fueled by greed and pursuing a government with no regulations or taxes.  They lack any empathy for their fellow humans.

In addition, they seem to hate the very planet they live on. They don’t believe in science, they prefer to let a bastardized, hate-filled form of religion that they call “Christianity” (it isn’t) dominate their culture. They don’t believe in evolution or climate change or really any science at all. They talk a lot about what they call faith, but is really just their inner fantasy world combined with right-wing talking points.  Do they really think Jesus wants to slaughter Middle Eastern men, women and children for American “freedom”?  Yes, they have even succeeded in transforming Jesus Christ into an asshole.

They actively work against science in many instances, and insist that our break with nature is naturally so complete and absolute that we can continue to pollute and trash the air and the planet (like with mountaintop removal) and nothing bad will happen, because we are “Americans”.

Being “American” is the way they lord all their bad ideas and lack of ideas over the Democrats and “liberals,” as though that label itself is a charm that wards off bad and evil things.   It’s ironic, because many of the Tea Baggers themselves are just stinkin’ bad people.

If the Democrats can’t defeat these people in 2010 there is no hope for the Democratic party at all.  This is something I have suspected for a long time so it would not surprise me that the Democrats would lay down and just die in the face of the scowls from Tea Baggers.

But for all my disgust with the tea party movement, it would be unwise to underestimate them. For more on that, see this article from the Progressive Magazine. There is more of a threatening depth to the Tea Party movement that many people are not aware of.  It’s not just ‘casually racist’ — it’s White Supremacist, and some of it’s violent.  Of course, you can’t contain that much hatred without some of it being released as violence.

Unfortunately you can only get the entire article if you subscribe. Here’s a  short clip:

“McAdam and his researchers have found that the Ron Paul libertarians, the Christian Right, and well-established ultraconservative groups such as the John Birch Society are all competing to inherit the tea party recruits in Montana and form them into a conservative political movement. Indications are that this is happening nationwide.

At the same time in Montana and some other states, it is clear that the tea bag and town hall protesters are also being recruited by white supremacist and organized racist groups.

The activities of the Militia of Montana and the government standoff with the Montana Freemen garnered national headlines in the 1990s when armed units emerged from the broader “Patriot” movement during the early years of the Clinton Administration.

Their ideas are “resurfacing at what are considered more mainstream meetings here in Montana,” McAdam says. “We hear talk about the one world government and black helicopters, and now these traditional anti-government conspiracy theories are incorporating new talking points related to, among other things, the swine flu vaccination and the private prison industry.”

On the ultraright, there is a plan among organized racists to encourage white people to move to Montana and build a segregated “separatist” homeland. “We even heard one racist leader suggest that conspiracy theories about Obama and the government are a soft way to get people interested in becoming active in building a white homeland here,” saysMcAdam. The white racists are well aware of McAdam. On the racist Stormfront website, a post suggested that “Travis McAdam can move his sorry butt to south africa and enjoy his negro overlords which he loves so much. Wonder if he’d cry for freedom then?”

  • I couldn’t agree more with your first paragraph. While I agree we need a better party that is responsible for their actions, I’m not liking the direction any of the parties are going. It doesn’t seem to matter which party is being discussed, they all become hate filled in one way or another.

I think that the 2010 election is going to be the biggest mud throw contest in the history of elections. Over advertised, over hyped and over the top ridiculous. Quite frankly, I’ll be glad when its all over.

I’m afraid you are right. I plan to tune out as much of it as I can, and I might not even vote. Both major parties are corrupt. Still, one is closer to what’s right than the other. Democrats can’t seem to get anything done but talk …. I’m certainly not going to give them any of my money. They just throw it away on junk for the campaigns anyway. People should stop giving money to campaigns entirely. — just let the corporations fund the campaigns from now on. That’s what it will amount to this year anyway. This will be a corporate and special interest election. The People no longer matter at all, according to the Supreme Court.
